What is Narcissism?

Narcissism refers to a personality trait characterized by excessive self-love, self-obsession, and an inflated sense of self-importance. Individuals who are narcissistic typically have an excessive need for admiration, attention, and validation, and may exhibit a lack of empathy towards others.

Narcissism is often associated with a sense of entitlement, a belief that one is superior to others, and a tendency to manipulate or exploit others to fulfill one’s own needs. Narcissistic individuals may also have a fragile self-esteem that is easily threatened by criticism or failure, leading to defensive and hostile behavior.

While some degree of narcissism is considered normal, it can become problematic when it interferes with a person’s ability to function effectively in relationships or society. Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a more severe and diagnosable form of narcissism that can cause significant impairment in a person’s functioning and well-being.
